A great idea in theory, but not half as cute or as clever as you hope it will be in actual practice in other words, it s me in book form.

Pluses It s a cute take on Sherlock Holmes.Squirrel Holmes drinks from a hamster water bottle instead of smoking a pipe.Dr Watt speaks using Morse code.Minuses I still have questions regarding the mysterious knocking, mainly, if the woodpecker wanted some milk, why did he keep flying away when Corny came to the door Also, how do you borrow milk Or rather, was he planning to return the milk after he borrowed it If so, how

First sentence Hamster Holmes was a very smart detective.Premise plot Hamster Holmes and his firefly sidekick Dr Watt solve mysteries together In this one a squirrel can t figure out who is knocking at his door late at night By the time he opens the door, no one is in sight Can these two detectives solve the case My thoughts I liked this one I probably would have liked it as a kid I loved hamsters Owned a few over the years too It is nice to introduce a new series of early readers to children Series are so very important developmentally.

My 5 year old loved this simple mystery She picked up on the clues and just about had everything figured out, which made her feel very proud I loved Hamster Holmes and his partner, a firefly named Dr Watt who communicates via Morse code.

It made feel anxious to Know who it was But it was a woodpecker.

  7. says:

Hamster Holmes and his lightning bug sidekick, Dr Watt, love to solve mysteries When a friend reports that someone has been knocking on his door and then disappearing before he can answer, the detective buddies know they have their next case. The mystery aspect keeps readers involved and guessing, whether or not they ve heard of the original Sherlock Holmes, and many parents and teachers will appreciate the fact that Hamster Holmes sucks on a water bottle instead of a pipe The fact that Dr Watt communicates in Morse code complete with a key in the book adds a fun, optional code breaking element to the story A stronger resolution probably would have bumped this one up from advisable to essential.

A charming beginning reader and a nice introduction to the mystery genre There is one plot flaw, though we never find out why the woodpecker didn t wait for Corny to come to the door I look forward to reading in this Sherlock Holmes themed series set in a cozy woodland.
